🚲✨ Bike Shop Tour! ✨🚲
Back in the early days of the pandemic—just before Bike Story Night was even an idea—I started a little project called Bike Shop Tour. With so many people rediscovering their love for cycling, I wanted to help them find and connect with local bike shops.
Every so often, I’ll highlight a different shop, giving you a peek inside and maybe even a little backstory on how it all began.
Let’s keep exploring and supporting the shops that keep us rolling! Be sure to like, follow, and leave them a Google review—every little bit helps these local businesses thrive.
🚴♀️ Stay tuned for more Bike Shop Tour stops, and thanks for being part of the ride!

Orange Bike Project
A Hidden Gem for Cyclists at UT
Orange Bike Project has been on my list of must-visit bike shops for a while, and I finally had the chance to check it out. Tucked away on the ground floor of the 27th St. parking garage, finding the shop felt like uncovering a secret underground lair—a hidden gem for students and bike lovers alike.
I was lucky to catch the shop manager, Eddy, who generously took the time to chat and answer my questions. I also met another Eddie, a student who has been coming to OBP for years and loves working on his bike in the shop. Talking with both of them, I felt a strong sense of community and a real commitment to keeping students mobile while at UT.
What makes Orange Bike Project special is that their mechanics aren’t just there to fix bikes—they’re there to empower cyclists. They teach riders the skills they need to perform their own repairs, stay self-sufficient, and stay connected to the cycling community. It’s a refreshing, hands-on approach that left me feeling hopeful for the future of bike culture at UT and beyond.
OBP will be joining us at Bike Story Night at UT on March 29th! If you’re curious about what they do, it’s a great chance to hear from them directly. And if you’re a student, I highly recommend stopping by the shop to check them out—whether you need help with a repair or just want to meet some friendly folks who love bikes as much as you do. 🚲💛
🔧 About the Shop:
Inspired by Austin’s Yellow Bike Project, the Orange Bike Project aims to empower the UT community’s mobility on and off campus. It provides affordable bike rentals and repairs to students and staff to keep UT riding.
Year Established: 2008
🏁 Shop Mission:
The Orange Bike Project isn’t just a bike shop. OBP’s mission is to make cycling accessible to a diverse community who may be intimidated by perceived dangers of cycling and high costs associated with ordinary bike shops. We rent and service ordinary, everyday bikes at a price point that keeps people rolling instead of putting off maintenance.
🚲 Fun Fact:
When OBP mechanics graduate from UT, we mar k their name and height on the wall by our front door!
🛠 About the Shop Community & Mechanics:
The Orange Bike Project hosts beginner-friendly group rides around town, providing bikes and helmets for free to all who attend. Combined with its mission to teach the UT community about bike maintenance, the group rides serve as a way to get first-time riders more confident in riding around town for transportation and as a way to connect with a vibrant community.
OBP mechanics are not just there to fix your bike. They’re there to empower cyclists by teaching them the necessary skills to perform common repairs and keep them connected to their community.

🚴♂️ Brooklyn Bike Doctor is now in Austin, Texas! 🌟 Originally established in Brooklyn in 2000, this shop is dedicated to meticulous repairs and custom-built bicycles. Alex the shop owner offers a wide range of services including frame alignment, thread cutting, and professional assembly and shipping.
This charming bike shop is conveniently situated on one of the most used bike paths in Austin, near 5th and Pleasant Valley, just behind the corner store. It's also close to a familiar landmark, HEB on E. 7th. The shop is open every day except Sunday, making it accessible for most of the week.
When you walk into Brooklyn Bike Doctor, you're greeted with high ceilings, natural light and, of course, bikes galore. The shop is well-stocked with a variety of bike parts and accessories, ensuring you'll find what you need. Take a closer look and you'll discover cool artwork and intriguing bike memorabilia that add to the shop's unique character. The overall vibe is one of dedication to bikes, making it clear that you're in expert hands. And if you're lucky, you might even get to meet the friendly shop dog!
I highly recommend you take some time to visit this local gem soon. Whether you're in need of repairs, custom builds, or just want to browse, Brooklyn Bike Doctor is the place to go.
Questions for the Owner:
What inspired you to bring Brooklyn Bike Doctor to Austin? Nothing inspired me to bring BBD to Austin: The shop was fine in Brooklyn from 2000 till the end of 2019 (the same location all 20 years) until I had to move to Austin and close up the shop to follow my family that wanted to move to ATX .
How has the transition from Brooklyn to Austin been for the shop? Transition from BK to Austin took over a year to find retail space and build it up for the shop . BBD closed in Brooklyn on September 30 of 2019 , reopened in Austin on January 1 2021. For a little while I had to do food delivery (on bike , of course), subcontract for one of ATX bike shops to assemble new bikes , and do bike repairs out of my garage to make a living …. It was not what I was used to but a fun experience.
What are some of the most common repairs or custom builds you do here? We do any type of repairs : flat tire repair , brake bleeds, tune ups, custom bike builds etc. We also do custom wheel building, often subcontracted by other bike shops or bicycle and pedicab manufacturers.
What advice would you give to someone new to cycling?
Buy a bicycle from a Local Bike Shop that is trusted and near your house - bicycle works and guaranteed to work, safe, checked and assembled by pros.
establish a relationship with your bike shop .
Do not recommend Craigslist, Amazon or FB marketplace, Walmart to purchase bike - you are taking a chance with any of the above.
purchase a helmet , blinking lights. Do not ride without those items .
Learn how to fix flat tires on your own; not only it saves you a trip to the bike shop , but you can fix it any time it happens and it can happen at any time : 5 am …, 1am … etc.
Do you have any exciting plans or goals for the shop? Keep on with professional development and training , up to date tools in order to deliver the best service is the plan for the near future.
Brooklyn Bike Doctor
Located in the E. MLK neighborhood, Yellow Bike Project is often the top recommendation when friends and I meet someone looking for a bike. It’s a place many of us have grown to love and rely on. I've met so many people who have found true gems at this shop.
Yellow Bike Mission:
Yellow Bike is a non-profit community bike shop with grassroots origins.
We EMPOWER individuals through life changing transportation, by providing workspace and tools, and cultivating enthusiastic community participation to advance our vision.
We EDUCATE people wanting to learn about bicycles and bicycle maintenance.
We REVIVE bicycles to get them on the streets of Austin and make them available to all.
Yellow Bike Project has been a cornerstone of the community for the past 27 years, providing invaluable services to those who love to explore and adventure by bike as well as for those who rely on bicycles as their primary mode of transportation. The shop exudes a creative, DIY vibe with fun signage and vibrant, artistic touches throughout the building. It’s like a classroom filled with everything bike-related, yet with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Employees and volunteers are always working on bikes or helping others learn to do so.
Near the entrance and front of the shop, you'll find at least 20 used bikes for sale, and there’s always a good variety and selection to look through and test out. Further into the shop, you’ll find bins filled with bike parts and neatly organized bike frames hanging from the ceiling. The shop's upstairs balcony showcases an impressive array of bike forks along the railing. There are several "work stands with tools for you to use and get to work on your own bike with the help of volunteers and or on your own.
Whether you're looking for a bike, want to donate your bike, take a workshop, become a volunteer, or support all the amazing work they’re doing, the Yellow Bike website has all the information you need. A key part of their mission is providing free access to the shop to the public, so be sure to check their calendar for available dates.

It was a pleasure exploring the diverse selection of bike accessories at BIKEALOT. They offer a fantastic array of options to meet all your biking needs, including a current sale with helmets currently at 20% off.
Getting to know Jeni, Brad, and their friendly pup Pashley was so lovely. They shared insights into their family-owned shop in South Austin, where a warm and welcoming atmosphere awaits every visitor. The shop's ambiance resonates with their love for bikes and nature, evident from the repurposed wood floors sourced from a school gym, which adds a unique charm to the space. The wall adorned with posters showcasing bike art spanning over a century adds to the shop's character as well.
Located in the Crockett Shopping Center, in between Reverie Book Store and Lazydaze cafe, BIKEALOT is conveniently located for enthusiasts of both cycling, literature and sweet treats.
Their website is a treasure trove of information covering everything from the bikes they carry to the services they offer alongside valuable bike-related resources.
